Having already matched last year’s totals of 10 goals and six assists, the young attacker likely won’t be able to surpass those figures before the season comes to a close after limping off against Espanyol.

Felix will now miss the vital part of the season

Joao Felix’s season looks to be over as injury has struck him down at the worst possible time not only for Atletico Madrid but also on a personal level as the Portuguese forward was beginning to exhibit some of his best football in a red-and-white shirt. Having already matched last year’s totals of 10 goals and six assists, the young attacker likely won’t be able to surpass those figures before the season comes to a close after limping off against Espanyol. In his third season with Los Colchoneros, Joao Felix has finally found his place in the team and has been playing with confidence. Still, he will now miss this vital part of the season as Diego Simeone’s side look to seal Champions League qualification.

Joao’s injury seems muscular

This blow comes after the former Benfica man racked up 19 consecutive games, his record for Atleti, and scored five in his last six. It is a reflection of his progress this season that this is seen as a major blow for the Rojiblancos, when once it seemed like he didn’t quite fit into their attack. Although it seems this injury is muscular and not a result of contact with another player, Joao Felix is one of the most at-risk players in LaLiga due to the number of fouls he suffers. The Portugal international is fouled once every 18 minutes, with defenders quick to scythe him down to put the brakes on him and the Atleti attack. Indeed, Atleti president Enrique Cerezo has been talking for some time about the fouls suffered by Joao Felix. And now, their mission in the coming weeks is a tougher one.

Atletico are currently fourth in the table, tied on points with Sevilla and Barcelona above them, but with Real Betis and Real Sociedad breathing down their necks. As they look to secure a top-four finish and a ticket to next season’s Champions League, Atleti will have to face Sevilla and La Real before the end of the season and champions-elect Real Madrid, not to mention a tough away trip to San Mames. There’s still a long way to go, and nothing is settled just yet.
