Former England batsman Jonathan Trott has been appointed head coach of Afghanistan and will join the team during their tour of Ireland next month, the country’s cricket board has said.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) named another Englishman Graham Thorpe as head coach in March, but was looking for someone to replace him after Thorpe became seriously ill.

“I am honored and excited to have the opportunity of one of international cricket’s most exciting teams to have a huge year ahead of their growth as a team,” Trott said in an ACB statement on Friday.

“I can’t wait to work with a group of players who are clearly capable of producing results in a style that will make the people of Afghanistan proud.”

Jonathan Trott, 41, born in South Africa, played 52 Tests before retiring in 2015.1

He has since served as England’s batting coach and a consultant with Scotland during last year’s T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan will play the first of their five T20 matches in Ireland on August 9 and will also take part in the T20 World Cup in Australia in October.
