Jos Buttler has been appointed as England’s new white-ball captain. Recently, Eoin Morgan retired from international cricket. Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler was already attached as the vice-captain to the team. He was a clear candidate for this new challenge and along the way he established himself as one of the most skilled white-ball players in the world.

Buttler smashed an unbeaten 162 off 70 balls to propel England to a 232-run victory in their first ODI against the Netherlands earlier this month. Prior to that Butler had registered four centuries for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022.

The 31-year-old’s stint as captain will begin on July 7 with the first of three T20 Internationals against India. The next challenge for him will be England leading India in three One Day Internationals.

Butler had recently captained England when Morgan was injured. In the third and final ODI against the Netherlands, he presided over an eight-wicket victory that secured a 3–0 series sweep.

“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for Eoin Morgan’s outstanding leadership over the past seven years,” said Joss Butler. “It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved. He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been wonderful to play under him. I have learned so many things from him that I will carry on in this role.

“It is a great honor to take over from Eoin, and the place he has left English white-ball cricket is exciting, and I look forward to the challenges ahead.

“England’s white-ball team has excellent strength, and I look forward to leading the teams for the series against India next week and against South Africa later in July.

“Captaining my country is the greatest honor, and when I’ve had the opportunity to step into the past, I love doing it. I can’t wait to take this team forward.”

England Men’s Cricket Managing Director Rob Key believes the captaincy can help take Butler’s game to new heights.

“Jos Buttler was the right choice to succeed Eoin Morgan as our white-ball captain, and I had no hesitation in offering him the role,” he said.

“Joss has been part of our white-ball set-up for over a decade and was integral to the transformation of the way the team has played its aggressive brand of cricket over the past seven years.

“All his teammates in the dressing room respect him and would love to lead their country. He is in the form of his life and is showcasing his talent against the best players and teams in the world.

“I am sure the added responsibility will take his game to a whole new level and inspire those around him. I look forward to seeing him take us forward. He totally deserves the opportunity.”
