The aim is to improve on last season’s sixth-place finish, which sees them playing in this year’s Europa League. The Portuguese coach is one year into his Roma project, one which has a three-year plan, and he has already ended the Giallorossi’s 14-year trophy drought.

Mourinho is the first Portuguese manager to win all three UEFA trophies in existence

Jose Mourinho has an ambitious project with Roma and is building a Champions League-level team in the Italian capital. The aim is to improve on last season’s sixth-place finish, which sees them playing in this year’s Europa League. The Portuguese coach is one year into his Roma project, one which has a three-year plan, and he has already ended the Giallorossi’s 14-year trophy drought. The Europa Conference League triumph not only gave Roma their first silverware since the 2008 Coppa Italia but also made Mourinho the first Portuguese manager to win all three UEFA trophies in existence. The goal for Mourinho is to get Roma back into the Champions League for the first time since 2018/19. They fell short of that in the season just gone, but improvements were made and the team being built gives reason for optimism.

Team spirit is important for Jose

Mourinho is being back at Roma, with the club spending more than any other Serie A side last season, except for Juventus, who spent the same. “We are happy with what we’re building. Team spirit is important,” said Mourinho last season. Building a squad to return to Europe’s elite table isn’t a cheap task, and Roma spent over 126 million euros last season. Players like Rui Patricio, Tammy Abraham and Eldor Shomurodov came in to bolster their ranks. The squad building continues this summer, and the eye-catching capture of Paulo Dybala has been the jewel in the crown of this project as it aims to step up a gear. The Argentine, who joins on a free transfer from Juventus, is expected to add some needed star quality to a solid side that lacked that special something.

He is looking to reinvent himself and get going again as the leading man in Mourinho’s attacking scheme. Nemanja Matic has also joined on a free transfer from Manchester United to add some experience and quality in the middle of the park. In contrast, seven million euros have been spent on defender Zeki Celik from Lille. In year two of the project, anything less than Champions League qualification would be a failure for Mourinho and Roma.
