Jose Mourinho was restrained by his staff before getting ejected from Sunday night’s Serie A match between Roma and Atalanta, which the hosts lost 1-0.

The 59-year-old Portuguese manager went into the field in the 54th minute to argue with the referee after a penalty call was overturned at the Stadio Olimpico.

Caleb Okoli, the center-back for Atalanta, knocked down Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, but no penalty kick was awarded. Instead, a foul was called against Atalanta.

Mourinho was sent a red card by referee Daniele Chiffi; this is not the first time the ‘Special One’ has been ejected from the bench during his time with Roma. The audience responded to the situation by singing their manager’s name and applauding, despite his absence from the touchline.

One Twitter user remarked that Jose Mourinho was “extremely enraged,” adding, “didn’t appear like a pen to me.”

In the meantime, a Mourinho fan account reported the encounter and concluded, “So far nothing new has transpired.”
Giorgio Scalvini’s goal in the 35th minute put Roma down 1-0, and it remained that way despite the commotion on the sides in the second half.

Mourinho has been in command of Roma since May 2021, having previously been in charge of English clubs Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United, as well as Real Madrid and his own Portugal.

Despite being at Roma for less than a season, Mourinho has already been shown the red card multiple times. Mourinho was dismissed from Roma’s preseason match against Real Betis shortly after taking over as manager last summer, along with three of his players, leaving the squad with only eight men on the field.

In February, the ‘Special One’ was sent off after kicking the ball away and making a gesture to the referee at the conclusion of his team’s 2-2 tie with Hellas Verona.

It is unclear whether Serie A will punish Mourinho for his dismissal. Due to the international break, Roma’s next game will be on October 1 against Inter Milan.
