Reportedly, Mourinho has turned down the chance to become the next Everton boss following the sacking of Rafa Benitez.

Everton recently confirmed the appointment of Duncan Ferguson as the club’s caretaker manager, but said a decision over the permanent role will be made ‘in due course’.

Nevertheless, Mourinho had been named alongside the likes of Derby manager Wayne Rooney and ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as a potential candidate.

According to reports, Everton have not yet made contact with Mourinho’s current club Roma but plan to. Farhad Moshiri is said to be gearing up for a move for the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss over the coming days.

However, Mourinho is said to be happy in Italy and remains committed to Serie A side Roma.

The Portuguese manager is only six months into his contract three-year at Roma but his side are currently sitting 7th in the Serie A table.

As a result, Roma’s hopes of making the Champions League are starting to fade and fingers are being pointed at Mourinho.

Nevertheless, Mourinho is eager to prove his doubters wrong and catch fifth place Juventus and sixth place Fiorentina.

Other possible candidates for the permanent role at Everton include Derby manager Rooney and ex-Chelsea boss Lampard.

Everton academy product Rooney, who had two spells playing for the club either side of 13 seasons with Manchester United, has been in charge at Derby for just over a year.

The Rams’ battle for survival in the Championship this term after being deducted 21 points has seen them take 13 from the last 15 on offer – they are currently eight adrift of safety in 23rd place. Lampard was Derby’s boss for the 2018-19 season, in which they have beaten play-off finalists, before taking charge at Chelsea in the summer that followed. He was sacked in January 2021 and has subsequently been out of work.

The search Benitez’s replacement has also seen Roberto Martinez, the Belgium head coach who was in charge at Goodison Park from 2013-2016, be named in the running.

According to reports, Everton were prepared to consider Martinez combining the two roles until at least the summer. However, such an arrangement was not deemed suitable for the Belgium national side.
