CricketJosh Hazlewood backs Glenn Maxwell concerning his form

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has backed Glenn Maxwell to correct his poor form ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Maxwell has struggled in the lead-up to the domestic T20 World Cup, scoring a total of 16 runs in his last six innings.

Still seen as an X-factor in the team for his ability to finish a game, Maxwell struggled in the latest match against England as he failed to find the boundary in a slow innings of 11.

Since March last year, he has scored 272 runs in 22 innings at an average of 15.11, which is well below his career T20I average of 28.23.

England won the second T20I against Australia and wrapped up a best-of-three series with one game to play. After setting up a total of 179 for victory, Australia could only manage 170 in reply as both the sides gear up for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

However, teammate Hazlewood is not too concerned about his form and has backed the 33-year-old to find the middle of the bat.

“I have played a lot with Glenn recently, especially (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and of course the Australian team, he is excellent in all three aspects of the game,” he told reporters.

“He is close to winning a game for us with his bat or ball or on the field.

“He’s an important part of our team and just strikes that balance beautifully.”

Hazlewood claimed that Maxwell may have been a bit put off from playing the No. 4 role, while big hitters such as Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David worked around him.

Instead, Hazlewood called on the dynamic batsman to play his natural game.

“You don’t want him [Glenn Maxwell] to go too far from his natural instincts,” he said.

“He’s the kind of player who just reacts to what’s coming and plays his game and that’s what you want from Glenn all the time.

“With the batsmen having depth, they can just go out and (Maxwell) play their game, whether it’s in the first six overs or outside spin, where he has been particularly destructive.”

The eight runs he scored in Australia’s defeat against England on Wednesday night was actually Glenn Maxwell’s most runs in an innings in the last six matches.

Maxwell’s position in the team has come under question as fans have questioned whether Australia can afford to take him in the upcoming World Cup.

Fox Sports commentator Mark Waugh said Maxwell’s form was a “real concern” for Australia, admitting he was “probably not locked” for the starting XI.

“Given the way he is on the field and his bowling, you would have thought he would,” Waugh said.

“But he is mainly there to bat at No. It will be interesting to see what happens next there.”

Australia have now lost one match after another to England, which is perhaps a worrying sign ahead of the side’s meeting in a group-stage match at the World Cup on 28 October.
