Jurgen Klopp has handed Liverpool a major boost ahead of their chance to make history by signing a new contract later this month.
Klopp had made it clear that he intended to depart Anfield when his current contract, which was set to expire in June 2024, expired, and he reiterated that fact in March, saying: ‘that will be me, thank you very much.’
Fortunately, Klopp has been re-energized this season, and, to use an analogy, he now has gasoline in the tank, and Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, were fully aware of this and were encouraged to make attempts to continue the collaboration.
Klopp has committed to June 2026, and the significance of the date cannot be overstated. Klopp’s 11-year tenure at Anfield will make him the club’s longest-serving manager since Bill Shankly, who led the club from 1959 to 1974. His influence is no less significant. ‘I’m not sure what words to use to express how I feel about this news… ‘Delighted, humbled, blessed, privileged, and excited are just a few words that come to mind,’ Klopp added. ‘It has to be a two-way street, like any healthy relationship.’
‘You have to be compatible with one another.’ It was the feeling that we were made for each other that brought me here in the first place, and it’s why I’ve previously extended. Because of the length of time we’ve been together, this one is unique.
‘I had to ask myself, is it right for me to stay longer in Liverpool?’ The response was, without a doubt, yes. Mike Gordon, the President of FSG, with whom Klopp has a close relationship, was present at Anfield for the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League tie with Villarreal, which saw the Reds advance to their third final in five years with a 2-0 victory.
