Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s side travels to Manchester City this weekend in a game that will undoubtedly determine the Premier League title winner.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has informed his players that Sunday’s match against Manchester City, the “greatest in the world,” will not determine their Premier League title hopes.

The Reds’ 3-1 win over Benfica in Lisbon puts them in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, as they continue their quest for an unprecedented quadruple.

With what appears to be a title duel against City at the Etihad on Sunday, there is little time to rest on their laurels.

With only eight games remaining in the season, City leads their north-west rivals by one point in what promises to be another nail-biting contest for English football’s top trophy. Back in October, the two Premier League giants faced off, with both sides forced to settle for a point – a result City is likely to repeat this time.

City’s own treble campaign continued on Tuesday night, as they now lead Atletico Madrid by a thin one-goal margin after breaking the Spaniards’ dogged resistance with a second-half Kevin de Bruyne effort.

Because of their domination both domestically and internationally, the Champions League draw might potentially ensure that Pep Guardiola and Klopp’s teams meet in the European final at the Parc des Princes.

However, in an effort to relieve some of the burden on his players, Klopp has stated that even winning the game would not guarantee them a second title in three years, owing to the quality of a squad he regards as the finest in the world.

“I don’t think anyone would assume, ‘That’s it, it’s decided,’ if we beat Man City, which is already a difficult opponent.’ This is due to the opponent’s caliber,” Klopp explained. “We’re up against the best squad in the world right now, but we’ll give it our best go.” That’s exactly what we need to accomplish.

“So we developed a foundation in the last few months, six, seven, or eight months since the season began.” We’ve reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals, and the further you get in a competition, the more difficult it becomes. Regrettably, it is the case.”

“You barely make it to the final and face a squad that you beat 8-0,” he continued. The Chelsea final was tight because it featured two world-class teams, and that will be the case for the rest of the season. Since late December, it has been evident that if we are to win anything, we must win all of our games. We realize this isn’t feasible, but that’s why we approach things one game at a time.

“Perhaps then it becomes a little more feasible.” However, it will be really difficult. Yes, everyone understands the significance of the upcoming game, but there will be other games in other competitions, as well as in the Premier League.

“If you can’t be first, you want to be second, and if you’re near, you want to seize the lead.” We’ll give it our best shot.”
