Justin Langer unlikely to get a contract extension
The four-year contract of coach Justin Langer with the Australian team expires in June, and the squad’s next trip to Pakistan might be his final assignment as head coach. Cricket Australia’s (CA) board of directors will meet this week and may decide to fire the head coach.
Todd Greenberg has said that senior players have the right to be consulted on Justin Langer’s future
According to reports doing rounds around Langer’s career with Cricket Australia, the board may not extend head coach Justin Langer’s contract with the Australian national team despite his successful stint with the Men’s team last year that included their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title win and the Ashes victory.
Speaking on the same, the Australian Cricket Association (CSA) chief Todd Greenberg has said that senior players have the right to be consulted on Justin Langer’s future, and analogies to coaches in other sports should be used with caution.
CA’s chief executive Nick Hockley and team performance supervisor Ben Oliver solicited comments ahead of their presentation to the board, according to Greenberg. Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch, the Test and white-ball captains, have recently been consulted.
“I know they’ve spoken to a number of our players, which is good because players should have a view,” Greenberg told The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. “But ultimately the players don’t make the sole decision on these things. They’re able to provide some feedback and ultimately these are decisions for the CA board.
“One thing you can’t dispute about Justin is he’s a legend of Australian cricket, having played 100 Test matches. He’s done an extremely good job over the last four years as coach, and in the last 12 months has had unbelievably strong success. He’s got a very strong resume. The question that will be on CA’s board in which direction they want to go to next.“
The Australian senior players voiced their displeasure with Justin’s coaching approach
Justin Langer, who was appointed as the head coach of the Australian men’s team in 2018, got embroiled in a squabble with the Australian players a few months ago, in which senior players voiced their displeasure with the former Australian opener’s coaching approach.
Langer was under tremendous pressure to maintain his job until the Ashes, but players have stated that there was a significant shift in Langer’s management when Australia won the T20 World Cup for the first time last year.
Reportedly, Langer was involved in heated arguments with CA officials over his contract extension for the coaching position. However, CA has denied all the reports.
