Kepa Arrizabalaga Vows to Retaliate After Missing the Penalty that Gave Liverpool the Carabao Cup
Following his missed penalty that cost Chelsea the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday, Kepa Arrizabalaga has broken his silence via a tweet.
The Spanish goalkeeper was called on at the end of extra-time because of his impressive penalty record. But things didn’t go according to plan as he failed to save any of Liverpool’s 11 penalties before missing his own.
Kepa addressed his cameo in a Tweet on Sunday night after receiving a lot of support from his teammates, management, and supporters.
‘To fall and rise,’ wrote the Chelsea goalie. ‘I’m disappointed after putting in a lot of effort during the competition.’ We will continue to work. Thank you for your support, @chelseafc family.’
Spain goalkeeper Kepa came off the bench in the final minutes of extra time expressly for the penalty shootout, although he would not have anticipated to take the penalty himself.
However, both keepers were forced to shoot at goal after a stunning series of penalties, and Kepa was the unlucky fall man, blazing high over the bar.
Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Kepa, was eager to defend the goalie, who had been substituted for Edouard Mendy just before the start of the penalty shootout.
‘If you want to blame someone, blame me; this is not an issue,’ Tuchel added.
‘I make decisions for me, not to attempt to be the hero.’ It took 11 penalties today to determine the winner. And if you want to blame someone, it’s fine with me.’
