Kevin De Bruyne wins Premier League player of the season
Since winning the prize two years ago, Kevin De Bruyne has joined a rare group of players twice.
What did Kevin De Bruyne say?
The Belgian beat Reds’ Mohamed Salah to be named PL Player of the Season for the second time in his career after an excellent 2021-22 campaign. The Man City star saw the Reds striker – who won the corresponding prize from the Football Writers Association earlier this month – to join a rare group of players to win the honor twice. Kevin De Bruyne was previously awarded the gong in 2019-20 and admitted it was an honor to claim it again.
The Belgian international told the club’s official website that winning this award for the second time is an achievement that he is really proud of. According to Kevin De Bruyne, there is so much quality in PL and it’s a pleasure to be nominated with so many other great players who have had incredible seasons for their clubs. Kevin thinks his performances this season have been good and he is happy to have been able to contribute with goals and assists throughout the season. De Bruyne thanks all the staff, the coaches and especially his teammates, because without them this would not have been possible.
Players defeated by Kevin for the bounty
In addition to Mohamed, De Bruyne won the trophy from teammate Joao Cancelo, Reds defender Alexander-Arnold, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Gunners’ Bukayo Saka, Tottenham’s Heung Ming and Southampton’s Ward-Prowse. Curiously, while Kevin becomes the first player since the Red Devils’ Nemanja Vidić to win the award for a second time, it also marks the second time he has failed to earn the corresponding FWA trophy, beating him in 2019-20 Liverpool’s Henderson. Just last year, when Rubén Diaz was in contention for both awards, the winners were level in the last four seasons, with the previous six times each having received two winners.
