Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski has what it takes to break his own 41-goal Bundesliga scoring record, according to Jurgen Klinsmann.

Robert’s record

Lewandowski scored on the final day of 2020/21 to set a new single-season benchmark for goals – despite missing five matches through injury.

Speaking at a media round-table involving bundesliga.com, former Germany forward Klinsmann spoke about Lewandowski’s extraordinary feat, the Bundesliga’s response to the Covid pandemic, Americans in the Bundesliga and the importance of Thomas Müller and Joshua Kimmich to Germany’s UEFA Euro 2020 campaign.

Klinsmann on Robert’s approach to training sessions

“Robert Lewandowski can only set his own standards. What he did this year is just breathtaking. He’s a complete number nine, the likes of which maybe we haven’t seen since Marco van Basten, 20, 25, 30 years ago. It’s so much fun to watch him and he’s supported by a group of players who constantly feed him the ball. He’s at one of the best clubs in the world, best teams in the world, so for him it’s probably doable, but the fact he broke that record is just an unbelievable story. Scoring that amount of goals is just insane and if there’s one to break it, it’s him. He’s still got a couple more years in him, if all goes smoothly.”

The coach about the Bundesliga

Jurgen believes that Bundesliga is a very attractive league. It’s probably one of the top leagues in the world for goals. The infrastructure is great there. I think you have to give the Bundesliga a huge compliment in how they handled Covid. It was the first league coming out of Covid and playing again. Even the NBA and MLS took it as an example of how to deal with Covid. And there’s always drama – just look at the promotion/ relegation play-off. Everyone in Germany will be watching those games. You had drama at the bottom and in the race for Europe.
