Koke Resurrection and Atlético de Madrid is an unbreakable pairing. The captain has been linked to the club practically all his life, since he entered the Academy at the age of six and now that he is 30, he faces a 2022-23 season that is presented as a date with history. Vallecano finished the course as the field player with the most minutes played in the squad (3,357), entering the eleven in 40 of the 43 games he played. And, although it was not Koke’s best season, it was again clear that he is probably the most important and indisputable player for Simeone. It was difficult for the captain to give speed to Atlético’s game and the midfield suffered after a fantastic 2020-21 season, in which Koke had been a basic piece in the League title from the pivot as in charge of starting the attacking plays. He would transfer that importance to the National Team , which reached the semifinals of the European Championship and extended his stay in the tournament until crashing with Italy, something that meant that Koke was one of the many players in the squad who started the preseason late and could not prepare the new course in its best physical version, which surely left consequences during the championship.
But, looking to the future, this summer there are days ahead to recharge batteries and find the best Koke again. And the stage could not be more exciting. Atlético is rearming to be able to fight for high levels and its captain is nine games away from becoming the player with the most games in the club’s history. The current best representative of courage and heart, the stripes on the shield, the pride and passion for the rojiblanco team has accumulated 545 official matches wearing the shirt of his life as a one club man and at the usual pace he will soon surpass Adelardo (553 according to the club statistics) , an athletic myth, at the top of the mattress podium. And, although sometimes his game is less showy, Koke has in Simeone, Luis Enrique or previously Lopetegui and Del Bosque the best supporters of him.
