Kusal Mendis was admitted to hospital in Dhaka, having left the ground. He was hospitalised after complaining of chest pains when Sri Lanka and Bangladesh faced off in the second test of the series at Mirpur, Dhaka, Monday, 23 May. The incident occurred minutes before lunch break during the first day of the test.

Before the incident occurred in the field in the 23rd over of the game, Sri Lanka was in a fantastic run, picking up five wickets within the first 10 overs of the game.

Half-centuries by Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das helped Bangladesh bounce back from their catastrophic opening day performance against Sri Lanka in the Second Test. The duo added 253 to their tally after Sri Lankan pace bowlers Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando shared five wickets between them, leaving Bangladesh tattered at 5-24 after a frantic first hour of play.

Mendis has undergone an ECG at a hospital in Dhaka, with results showing no serious complications, Sri Lankan team officials said. Bangladeshs Daily Star reported Mendis was taken for a preventive scan at a local medical complex in Dhaka. Bangladesh Cricket Board doctor Manzur Hossain had originally said Kusal Mendis discomfort might be caused by dehydration or gastritis. Doctor Manzur Hossain Choudhury added that Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis was suffering dehydration heading into the game, conditions and heat had affected others earlier.

The doctor further mentioned the players were suffering dehydration prior to the second Test, and this may have been the probable cause. He said Sri Lankan opener Kusal Mendis was suffering dehydration before, and it may have been a reason why he felt a pounding in his chest throughout the game. Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis was reported to have been batting on a slide when he was seen uncomfortable with a possible chest pain. Sri Lanka had to resort to the option of a concussion on pacer Vishwa Fernando after being struck by a bouncer from Shoreful Islam on day two at Chattogram.

BCB doctors informed that Kusal Mendis had been struggling with dehydration before the game, which may have been a cause for chest pain, pointing out that this may have been an instance of gastritis as well. Choudhury further stated that Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis was suffering from dehydration prior to the game, and said it could be the probable cause. As per initial updates, Bengal Cricket Board (BCB) doctor Manzur Hossain Chowdhury said Mendis was taken to the local hospital here to get proper diagnosis and better treatment while suffering dehydration leading up to the game.
