Barca have a moral debt to Messi

Barcelona directors have recently discussed the hypothetical scenario of Lionel Messi’s potential return to the Camp Nou next summer. The last one to speak out was vice-president Eduard Romeu, who said that the Argentine’s comeback could be possible and financially viable, as he could join the Blaugrana as a free agent. A few weeks ago, president Joan Laporta had made clear that he wants the current Paris Saint-Germain forward to hang up his boots in Catalonia. “We have a moral debt with him in this sense,” Laporta said. “We would like the end of his career to be with the Barcelona shirt and being applauded at all the grounds.” Meanwhile, Barcelona fans could be wondering to what extent one day Messi may return to Barcelona. At the moment, the possibility is very remote. No matter what is said, many issues need to be solved.

Leo has not forgotten certain attitudes that led to his harsh departure from the club.

First of all, the relationship between the two parties is practically non-existent. The Argentine forward has heard all the rumours, but so far, no one has made contact with Messi about a potential return. In addition, he needs to be convinced, which will require a lot of convincing. Everyone knows how he departed the team, as he left in tears and with the feeling that Laporta had betrayed him after having reached an agreement, one which the president cancelled at the last minute. Messi doesn’t like Barcelona directors talking about him all day. And this is something that the Catalans should have learned by now. On the other hand, for Messi to return, some people from the dressing room and the offices would have to leave the club first. The Argentine has not forgotten certain attitudes that led to his harsh departure from the club.

Last but not least, he should be considered as a starter and not as a backup. No one should forget the financial situation of the club. It has indeed improved, but the main objective now for the directors is to reduce the salary cap because it is still sky-high. If Messi joins the club, his salary should be expected to be high. Messi is not thinking about anything else now apart from his season at PSG and the upcoming World Cup. Argentina are considered as one of the favourites, and this is his last chance to win the only trophy missing from his trophy cabinet.
