A move elsewhere for the Spain international has been mooted, with Premier League heavyweights Manchester United and Arsenal being among his destinations.
Vazquez is calm
Lucas Vazquez is getting close free agency at Real Madrid, but the versatile 29-year-old is keen to land a new contract with “the best club in the world”. A move elsewhere for the Spain international has been mooted, with Premier League heavyweights Manchester United and Arsenal being among his destinations. However, renewal negotiations were held at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, and despite the uncertainty caused by the departure of Zinedine Zidane, documents may still be signed in the Spanish capital. Discussing his future, Vazquez said: “I’m calm. Who wouldn’t want to keep playing for the best club in the world? We’ll know something soon, I can’t imagine my life without football.” Vazquez spent his entire senior career at Real Madrid, having taken 240 appearances for the Liga giants.
Lucas went from being an offensive winger to just a winger
He has landed two national titles and three Champions League crowns, and a period with the Blancos, which allowed him to work alongside such great players as Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo. “Sergio is our main leader, and Ronaldo is a world-class player,” added Vazquez. “They both give their best in every workout. The way Ramos, Cristiano or Luka Modric do, you play better is contagious. You study from them and become a better player every day.” Vazquez started as a forward with Real Madrid but was moved back to provide a solid cover option on the right-back, with Dani Carvajal picking up a series of untimely knocks in that position. On his versatility, the hard-working part of the Madrid fold said: “I went from being an offensive winger to just a winger.
“Football has evolved and developed so that every winger played like an inverted winger on opposite flanks and natural wingers like me are hard to find right now. Until this season, I was not comfortable playing as a right-back; it was a strange feeling.” Vazquez took in 34 appearances in all competitions in the 2020-21 campaign before seeing his season end in April by a knee ligament injury.
