Luis Enrique is going to wait for Busquets

Spain head coach Luis Enrique clarified that he would keep Sergio Busquets in his squad for Euro 2020, following a positive COVID-19 check of the midfielder. Sergio will miss Spain’s opener with Sweden on June 14, but he should be back in time to play against Poland in the second match on June 19. “I’m going to wait for Busquets,” Luis Enrique said when asked about the player during a press conference on Thursday. “We will all wait for him. He has an advantage because he was the first, and there is time. So he will be on the list. He’s perfect, asymptomatic, and can train. He has a training plan and is in contact with the staff. We hope it’s all just a scare.”

Spain have adapted to a plan B

When Busquets’ COVID-19 positive test has revealed, a sense of panic set in for the Spain national team, with Diego Llorente also testing positive a couple of days later, but hopefully, it was just a false positive. “When the virus hits, it is difficult to manage. Here it has entered,” commented Luis Enrique. “Despite the second case of Llorente, which may be a false positive, it would be nice if it were confirmed. We have adapted to a plan B. If the virus continues to spread, we have players who have been joining. I want to praise the U21 staff because they organized everything in record time. Everyone’s attitude is commendable.”

“I called up six players. They were great—their ability to change plans. With holidays to Cancun that have been cancelled, people in Mykonos. They were all willing to give up their vacation and come without anything guaranteed. Because I don’t know whether they will get into the team for Euro 2020.” There has been a lot of controversy in Spain about whether to vaccinate the national team to try and prevent something like this from missing out on their chances later in the tournament, with Luis Enrique stating that it is something that is being considered. “The president Luis Rubiales and the sporting director Jose Francisco Molina told us that we could be vaccinated,” he expressed. “That could not be achieved, but we accepted it willingly. It is not yet certain that we will be vaccinated. Each case will be considered on an individual basis.”
