Rubiales wants to ask Tebas to change the format of La Liga

Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has said that he intends to talk with his LaLiga counterpart, Javier Tebas, about changes to the format of Spanish football. Rubiales wants fewer games, thus freeing up space in the calendar, and is interested in the idea of playing matches abroad. “You have to ask for respect; Tebas and I aren’t going to think the same. Of course, I’m open to looking at some agreements for football,” said Rubiales to Europa Press on Wednesday morning. “In the coming days, I’m going to ask Tebas to change the format of LaLiga. We’ve changed the format of many competitions. “We are in a place where we can present a different format, more attractive, with fewer games and more free weeks in the calendar. Neutral venues, fewer matchdays, and of course, we can look at playing a game abroad.”

Unai Simon could be one of the symbols of the team

It will be interesting to see how Tebas reacts to the RFEF president sticking his nose into LaLiga’s business and suggesting such radical changes to the shape of the football in the country. Rubiales also had some things to say about the national team, and he was pleased with Spain’s showing at Euro 2020, praising the players before mentioning that a new contract for Luis Enrique would be discussed. “Alvaro Morata’s numbers have no comparison. He’s such a great guy. Unai Simon could be one of the symbols of the team,” said Rubiales. “The Italians told us we deserved to go through. There are young players and not so young ones, such as Sergio Busquets, Cesar Azpilicueta, Aymeric Laporte, who have been superb. “People have connected with the national team again. Fifteen million Spaniards sat down to watch Spain.”

The RFEF chief also had a special word for Sergio Ramos, but he refused to say if Luis Enrique should have called up the defender. “Ramos belongs to that group of players who gave us everything,” said Rubiales. “The head coach is the one who decides. It would be a mistake for me to say anything. “We give them the tools, but they are the ones who decide.”
