Man United defender, Luke Shaw has signed a new four-year contract keeping him at the Theatre of Dreams until 2027.
Luke Shaw’s previous deal at United was due to expire in 2024. But the 27-year-old has now put pen to paper on fresh terms that will take him through shortly before his 32nd birthday and take his time at the club to 13 years.
The defender was first brought to the club as a teenager by former manager Louis van Gaal in 2014. He signed from Southampton for an estimated £30 million fee.
He made his competitive debut one month into the season in a 2-1 home win against West Ham United. One year later, he suffered a career-threatening injury in a Champions League group stage fixture against PSV Eindhoven. He was substituted with a double leg fracture and was one of action for 11 months.
He won his first major trophies at Old Trafford in the 2016/17 season where he helped his side to the Carabao Cup and Europa League.
Although he only made six appearances from a possible 21 across both competitions, then-manager Jose Mourinho prefered the likes of Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, and Marcos Rojo.
It wasn’t until the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that Shaw started to become a regular starter for the Red Devils. He was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in 2018/19, featuring 40 times in all competitions.
His peak at Man United undeniably came in the 2020/21 season, when he was included in PFA Premier League Team of the Season. He played 47 times for Solskjaer’s side, most notably scoring in a derby against runaway champions Manchester City.
That form earned him a recall to the England national team, having been out of the squad for over two years. Later that summer, he scored in the 2020 European Championship final against Italy.
The signings of Alex Telles and Tyrell Malacia put Shaw’s place in the Man Utd starting XI under threat. However, he has retained his position and remains a regular starter for Erik ten Hag.
Shaw has established himself as the key figure under Erik ten Hag this season. He has featured 36 times across all competitions and registered one goal and six assists.
The England international has been utilised at centre-back in addition to his more recognised position of left-back during his first season at the helm.
Shaw said, “nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club. I’m thrilled to be extending my stay. I’ve grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago. Both as a person and as a player. I know what is needed to succedd at a club like this”.
“We are at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We’ve been successful already this season. But we want much more. There’s great opportunity to create something special here. And I’m going to give everything to be of that”.
Man United’s football director John Murtough added, “Luke is a massively importnat player to the squad. He has grown into one of the best defenders in the world. He has been at the club for nearly a decade and understands the expectations for success and the hardwork, commitment and high standards required to achieve it.”
“He has added leadership to his other outstanding abilites. We all look forward to seeing him in a Manchester United shirt for years to come”.
