The Manchester City manager is considering a move for Stefan Ortega, who is available for free after Bielefeld’s relegation from the Bundesliga.

A little about the topic

The Citizens are considering bringing in a new backup goaltender to Ederson Moraes’ first choice, with the German player being seen as a potential option. Stefan Ortega is available on a free transfer after his contract with Arminia Bielefeld expired following the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga. American football player Zack Steffen is currently the second choice and only signed a contract extension until 2025 in November.

Stefan Ortega started all Bielefeld Bundesliga matches last season bar one due to covid and boosted his reputation despite his club finishing second bottom. The German goalkeeper has been on standby for Germany’s Euro 2020 squad and has previously been linked with a move to Bayern Munich as support for Neuer. Stefan is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, an attribute that Guardiola sees as crucial in his keepers.

The goalkeeper situation

Zack played in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup last season but is in a battle with the Gunners’ Turner for the USMNT No. 1 spot ahead of this year’s World Cup. The player made a disastrous individual error in an FA Cup semi-final defeat to the Blues when he was caught blunting the ball, although Pep said it was an accident and he would learn for the future.

The Citizens recently sold Gavin Bazunu to Southampton for £12m, having spent the previous two seasons on loan in League One and never made an appearance for the club. Current third-choice keeper Carson has already signed a new 12-month contract to stay at the Etihad Stadium, while England under-21 goalkeeper Trafford has gone to League One on a season-long loan. Undisputed No. 1 Ederson has a contract that will run until 2026 after the goalkeeper signed an extension in September 2021.
