Manchester United has told Barcelona that they will not spend £70 million on Frenkie de Jong this summer despite Erk ten Hag wanting a reunion with the star.

De Jong is a priority target for United, with new manager Erik ten Hag eager to reunite with the former Ajax midfielder.

Barcelona wants to reclaim the £65 million it paid to Ajax for De Jong in 2019.
A compromise is still a long way off. Barca and De Jong’s agents have been informed that United would not be able to devote such a large portion of their transfer finances to the Holland star.
Because United missed out on the Champions League, Ten Hag will have to operate on a tight budget when he starts work next week.
With up to ten players due to go, he confronts a big rebuilding job, but the club is committed to remaining disciplined in the transfer market.

If Barcelona decides to sell De Jong, the 25-year-old would want to stay at the Nou Camp or join a Champions League team.

Due to the club’s continuous financial woes, Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated he may have no choice but to unload key stars.
‘I’m not sure if we’ll sell key players,’ he added. ‘If we close a few deals, it might not be necessary.’ Our financial condition takes precedence. We will make the right decision for the club.’

Ten Hag wants to recruit a central midfielder as well as a striker to replace Edinson Cavani. Darwin Nunez of Benfica is a target.

Although United still have alternatives in that position even if Eric Bailly and Phil Jones go, the incoming manager may reinforce in central defense amid reports he might raid Ajax for Jurrien Timber or Lisandro Martinez.

Meanwhile, Juventus is battling to match Paul Pogba’s offer from Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid is also expected to contact the France midfielder.
