Man United’s mega-rich superstars dominate L’Equipe’s list of the Premier League’s highest-paid players, with the club employing four of the top five earners this season.

Reportedly, Manchester United is spending big on wages but has been forced to endure another trophyless season following their Champions League last-16 exit and unstable record in the Premier League. As a result, the destinies of several of their waning stars remain uncertain. However, for the time being, only a few of them have made the coveted list of the division’s wealthiest footballers, with Cristiano Ronaldo topping the list.

Ronaldo, who returned to United for a dramatic homecoming at the start of the season, is estimated to earn an eye-watering £2.2million every month. This puts him comfortably in first place in the top five, with an annual income of just over £26.4 million.

However, whether United are receiving value for money is debatable, given Ronaldo’s 18 goals this season have been offset by continuous concerns about his work rate off the ball and his future in the team, having recently turned 37 and being left out multiple times by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City’s talisman, is second on the list, earning £1.7 million per month – or £20.4 million per year.

Meanwhile, United goalkeeper David de Gea is the third highest paid player in the Premier League, earning an astounding £1.6 million each month.

Despite criticism from some sections of the United supporters, the Spain international is estimated to earn £19.2 million per year and is usually regarded as one of the league’s greatest goalkeepers.

The top five is completed by two more Manchester United players: in-form attacker Jadon Sancho and defender Raphael Varane.

According to reports, Sancho earns £1.5 million per month, or £18 million per year. That comes as a result of his £73 million summer signing from Borussia Dortmund, during which he struggled for form and was dropped from both United’s starting lineup and the England squad. Sancho’s fortunes have improved recently, and he appears to be settling well.

Varane, on the other hand, signed a contract worth £1.3 million each month, or an equally eye-popping £15.6 million per year.

Varane joined United for £42 million from Real Madrid last summer and was heralded as the missing piece in the jigsaw that would see United challenge for the title. However, the Frenchman’s form has dipped, as has that of the rest of United’s backline, which includes fellow center-backs Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

According to Forbes, United are the fourth wealthiest club in the world, valued at £2.9 billion – despite their persistent on-field struggles.

Surprisingly, three of the players they signed last summer – Ronaldo, Sancho, and Varane – have been named in L’Equipe’s top five list.

When all of United’s players’ earnings are added together, the club’s payroll reportedly runs at £388 million per year, with Ronaldo’s hefty fees accounting for a major portion. Their massive outlay, however, has not been matched by their on-field performances.
