Runaway English Premier League leaders Manchester City won a crucial game that may have handed them the EPL title.
The citizens extended their lead to 17 points after seeing off third place Leicester City on Saturday. Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus struck for the city while the host Leicester could not find a confrontation goal. Pep Guardiola needs only 3 wins and one draw from their remaining seven matches to be crown EPL 2020/21 champions.
In a scoreline of 0-2, Kevin De Bruyne was instrumental setting up Gabriel Jesus’ goal and the second. De Bruyne was at his very best and he could not hide his joy after the win.
“It was really good today, especially in the first half when we dominated,” said De Bruyne.
“There was one team playing. In the second half, they did a bit better, but I think we deserved more goals. Half the team started training on Friday,” he revealed.
On the other hand, Leicester City Manager Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with his team display. He tied the poor performances to tiredness but hails his side organization.
“We didn’t show the quality we have got but that comes with a bit of tiredness sometimes,” Rodgers said.
“Our organization was good but we didn’t get through the pitch well at times. If you concede against a team with that much quality they can just hide the ball from you,” he added.
Despite the loss, Brendan Rodgers’ side is still safe for the Champions League qualification. They are 7 points from ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool and West Ham United who are both leveled at 49 points. They are also 5 points from Chelsea, 4th, who lost heavily to relegation-threatened West Brom Albion.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are in action in Sunday’s late kickoff match against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer boys are chasing the run-away leaders, free-scoring Manchester City with the hope of catching up. Should they win; United will be four points from Leicester and 14 points behind Manchester City.
