Riyad Mahrez and Manchester City have started contract negotiations as he enters the last year of his current deal.
Following his best season at the club to date, Riyad Mahrez’s contract with Manchester City is being considered for extension. It has been learned that the 31-year-old, whose current contract is entering its last year, is in negotiations with the Premier League winners.
Mahrez scored 24 goals in all competitions to complete the season as City’s leading scorer, his highest output since his £60 million transfer from Leicester City.
Initial conversations have been productive, and Mahrez is expected to commit to his future.
The team’s attacking line is being updated this summer by Pep Guardiola, but the Algerian international will stay at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal’s next £45 million acquisition, Gabriel Jesus, is expected to be confirmed, while Chelsea is negotiating to get Raheem Sterling.
The contracts of both of those players with City expire the next year, and Mahrez is the third prominent forward whose contract is about to expire.
However, City is attempting to extend the winger’s contract through 2023, which would give him more than five years with the team.
Should Sterling go for Stamford Bridge, Guardiola will have six attackers to select from, including recent additions Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
Academic output On the right, Cole Palmer will serve as Mahrez’s backup, with Phil Foden and Jack Grealish often positioned on the opposing flank.
