Solskjaer’s side came from behind to beat the Austrian side LASK at Old Trafford advancing to the quarter-finals of the Europa League 7-0 on aggregate.

Manchester United made their way into Europa League quarter-finals with a 7-1 aggregate defeat of LASK following a 2-1 win in the last 16-second leg.

Jesse Lingard showcased a spectacular opening goal from Philip Wiesinger before substitute Anthony Martial sealed the win with two minutes of normal time left.

Although United had come to win, Solskjaer made nine changes from the team that ended the Premier League season with a 2-0 win at Leicester City, leading to a disjointed first-half display in which they failed to muster a shot on target.

United’s first meaningful effort on goal was a low strike from Odion Ighalo. The Nigerian turned well from Juan Mata’s pass but shot too close to the visitor’s keeper, Alexander Schlager.

At the other end, Romero could do nothing to stop Wiesinger from placing LASK ahead. The defender sent a stunning first-time strike into the top-right corner from 25 yards out.

The lead lasted for only two minutes as Juan Mata sent a pass into Lingard’s path who had plenty of time to side-foot past Schlager from inside the penalty area.

Romero kept out a Dominik Reiter effort at his near post before Solskjaer handed the 18-year-old Teden Mengi his senior debut at right-back.

It was another second-half substitute, Anthony Martial who got the winner. The Frenchman superbly combined with Mata before side-footing through Schlager’s legs who was unable to keep the shout out.

Lingard finally finding his form

Lingard looked quite sprightly but that didn’t hold his former team-mate, Paul Scholes, from casting doubts over his future.

“Recently, he’s not been good enough”. Said Scholes

“I know what he’s capable of. But at United, he’s just become a squad player. Unless there are a lot of injuries, I don’t see Jesse getting a run of games”.

“To bring him off after an hour when he definitely won’t start on Monday that was a little sign”. Concluded Scholes.

Lingard, who didn’t appear pleased to be taken off having fired United level on the night wrote on Social media. “I lost who I was a player and person. But I never wanted to give up”.
