Gareth Southgate has warned Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho that if they don’t perform, they will miss out on the World Cup finals in Qatar.

Rashfird and Sancho both missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final shootout. As a result, Sancho was last selected for the England team in October 2021, while Rashford was last selected in November last year.

Sancho, 22, and Rashford, 24, were once seen as England’s future stars. But they are now on the outside and appear poised to miss out in Qatar this year.

Sancho has had a mixed season amid the Manchester United disaster, as his £73 million transfer was overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, while Rashford has four goals and two assists this season.

‘There’s enough of a block of games at the start of next season that players can still play their way into [the World Cup team],’ Southgate said.

‘However, they must begin to play well with their club.’ At the conclusion of the season, none of them had truly played. ‘What you do at your club has an impact on England, and you must get your club aspect perfect.’ Because their level hasn’t been at the level of the others, there’s certainly room for those two now, compared to others in those places that we’ve chosen.

‘It all hinges on getting into the team, pleasing the manager, and having a good start to the season.’

With the World Cup starting in November, Sancho and Rashford will have to hit the ground running under new boss Ten Hag.

Because of England’s strength in the attacking positions, they will need to make an impression early in the season just to be considered.

Jarrod Bowen of West Ham is currently ahead of them in the pecking order, with Mason Mount, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, and Jack Grealish all capable of filling the wide duties.

Luke Shaw is also out, owing to an operation in April to remove metal screws from his leg when they began to bother him, but Harry Maguire has escaped the ax despite a poor season.
‘Unfortunately, Luke has not been able to get any football at the moment,’ stated Southgate.

‘He had the procedure, and we couldn’t choose him because of his current condition.’ For the other two guys, things are a little different. It all hinges on making the team, pleasing the manager, and having a good start to the season.

‘Obviously, there has been a significant shift at the club, and this will have an impact on everything.’ ‘In my opinion, Harry Maguire is still their finest center back – I’m sure the manager will disagree.’ For us, he has continuously been at a level where he would still be among our top two or three, based on all of our statistics throughout the season.’
