England will name a preliminary Euros squad before their final one is named with Marcus Rashford at risk of missing out.
England boss Gareth Southgate will name a 30-plus training squad on Tuesday ahead of next month’s tournament with growing doubts over whether Luke Shaw will be fit.
Shaw, who is a serious worry because of a long-running hamstring issue, is one of a host of defenders who are either struggling for fitness, have not had enough game time or remain on the treatment table.
Manchester United forward Rashford is likely to be in the bigger squad. However, he is at serious risk for the final 26-man group for Germany as he has not started for his club since April 21 and not scored since March 17.
Rashford has been a mainstay for England. He was one of the biggest stars at the last tournaments. Unfortunately, he now faces major competition from the likes of Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden as first choices while the likes of Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen may all have moved ahead of him.
Harry Kane is expected to be fully fit for the Euros despite missing Bayern Munich’s last two games while Gordon is a fitness worry with an Achilles injury which has forced him out of Newcastle ’s end-of-season trip to Newcastle.
Southgate’s biggest worry is at left-back as Shaw has not played since February with a hamstring issue, Ben Chilwell has also been out while Kieran Trippier has started just one game in the last three months.
England will name a bigger party that will meet up next week while the Manchester City and United players involved in the FA Cup final will not join until the following week as they will be given their end of season break.
City and United stars may not be involved in the first friendly with Bosnia & Herzegovina while Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham will get an extra break after the Champions League final on June 1 and may only be on the bench for the last warm-up against Iceland on Friday, June 7.
The training squad gets trimmed to the final 26-man squad on Saturday, June 8.
