Stoinis was called back in Australia’s squad to play the three-match series against England on Thursday, while spin-bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar has also returned from injury ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Marcus Stoinis was a hero in the win against Australia in the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last year, with Matthew Wade as a finisher to cement his own place in the team.
With the selectors backing him, Marcus Stoinis’ fitness is set to be tested against England at the Optus Stadium in Perth’s return to international cricket since the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I had a good solid bowl yesterday. Our physio Nick Jones is also here, so he ticked everyone off and looked well,” Stoinis said, confirming that he would go ahead if picked against England. Will bowl. “I think I could have played [against West Indies]. But it was not worth it because of the trip there.”
Stoinis, however, said he was unimpressed by the situation and hoped that the 23-year-old Green could be included in the squad somehow.
“Cameron Greene is like our little brother,” he said. “I’ve played club cricket with him. We’re proud of him and he’s got such a great future. He’s really good now. We’re happy for him.”
Similarly 12 months ago, Stoinis was preparing to reprise his role as a tough middle-order batsman who could bowl easy overs with his pace.
“We definitely have a brand… all-rounders need to bowl and get a few overs like in the last [T20] World Cup, where either me or Mitch [Marsh] was bowling,” he added. “And yes, batting in the middle overs, so I don’t think many things will change.”
Agar also confirmed his availability after being sidelined due to a side strain during Australia’s ODI series against Zimbabwe last month.
“I’m feeling great. It’s always hard to get back to batting and bowling and get the confidence back in my body,” he said. “I’m trying to piece together some good sessions at the moment and get my confidence back.”
