US football player Matt Turner says his decision to join the Gunners was a necessary risk, as the United States’ international community was itching around for regular playing time.

What did Matt Turner say?

Matt Turner made a bold career call in the summer of 2022 as he stepped out of the MLS comfort zone into a new challenge with the Premier League heavyweights. The US national team goalkeeper was aware he would face Aaron Ramsdale for minutes at Emirates Stadium but believes a transfer to Europe had to be made in order to take his game to the next level.

Commenting on whether he received any reassurance from Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta regarding action in the 2022-23 campaign, the US national team player told reporters absolutely not. According to Matt Turner, there are no guarantees in this game. It’s all about how they train and how they earn the trust of their manager and those around them.

The American says they are getting opportunities to play as they are doing at this moment. He wasn’t given any specific clarification on his role, it’s just that if they show up, they go in and work hard, anything can happen. So it was a risk for Turner to go from a punch to a place where he wasn’t guaranteed to be a regular starter, but it felt like a necessary risk he had to take. Matt Turner also said that he always wants to challenge himself at the highest level and feels like he’s here now.
