Mauricio Pochettino’s relationship with PSG is approaching a critical level
Mauricio Pochettino is no longer safe at the Parc des Princes and is being looked after for a better job at Old Trafford.
Today’s situation
The Argentine manager’s relationship with PSG is nearing a tipping point, while Man Utd has set his sights on the former Tottenham boss as his potential next permanent manager. Mauricio replaced Tuchel at the Parc des Princes in January 2021, after over a year of coaching following his resignation at Spurs, and has since guided the club to two domestic trophies. Paris Saint-Germain also climbed to the top of the Ligue 1 table in Argentina’s first full season, 16 points cleared of runner-up Marseille, but his credibility is still being questioned amid a series of inconclusive performances.
Paris Saint-Germain suffered a surprise round of 16 Coupe de France exits at the hands of Nice last month, putting additional pressure on Mauricio, who is not entirely happy at the club and could step down at the end of the season. The Argentine manager’s relationship with Leonardo’s board and sporting director has become strained after he was denied a chance to clear a number of first-team players last summer, leaving him with an overburdened 30-man squad.
Paris Saint-Germain officials have also denied his request to sign Ndombele from Spurs in January and the club has already identified Zidane as a potential replacement as their relationship continues to deteriorate – albeit with a former Real Madrid boss currently uninterested in the job.
Can Mauricio Pochettino leave for Man Utd?
If Mauricio does leave Paris Saint-Germain, he is eager to move straight to another head coaching position and a place in the Old Trafford dugout could await. Parc des Princes tactician is still one of Man Utd’s preferred candidates to replace Solskjaer as their permanent head coach in the summer – at which point interim boss Ralf Rangnick should move into an advisory role.
However, the departure of Mauricio Pochettino from Paris Saint-Germain could still be hastened, with the board likely to make a change of leadership if they can not organize a victory over Real Madrid in the last 16 Champions League matches. The elimination of Coupe de France has shaken their faith in Mauricio and he will need to earn a positive in their European tie’s first match against Blancos in Paris on Tuesday to return to his good graces.
