The most successful captain in the history of Australian cricket is back in the nets. Yes, we are talking about Meg Lanning who took indefinite break from cricket a few months ago. The dark clouds loomed as it was improbable to decide when she will make her return.

But she is back in the nets and declaring that she is “all in” to resume her duty in the same fashion as she earlier did. Meg Lanning has been named captain of the Australian women’s team who will host Pakistan women’s team on home soil.

Lanning hasn’t been on field for five months. During this time, Women’s Big Bash League passed and Cricket Australia’s women’s team successfully toured India winning T20Is 4-1 in absence of her.

After a busy schedule that included an Ashes series, the 50-over World Cup, and the Commonwealth Games, Lanning took an extended vacation and hasn’t played for five months.

When she was seen in the nets on Thursday, there were rumblings that she could be close to making a comeback. On Friday morning, the rumours were validated when she was appointed captain to guide the 13-person team.

Tahlia McGrath will continue to serve as vice-captain because stand-in skipper Healy will miss the series due to a calf injury sustained in India. Lanning’s leadership and batting skills are just what the Aussies need.

Phoebe Litchfield, a rising star, and Kim Garth, a former Irish spinner, have both been selected and are set to make their ODI debuts. Jess Jonassen, though, must recover from a hamstring injury if she is to be considered for the opening match on January 16.

Flegler is optimistic that Healy will be able to return for the T20 phase of the Pakistan series despite the fact that she will have scans in Melbourne on Friday.
