Depay has been linked with a Barça move and is in the final year of his contract with Lyon’s current employers, who will either have to cash in during January or risk losing one of their unique benefits for next to nothing at the end of the season.
Koeman refused to sign Depay
Memphis Depay can help Barcelona rebuild for the future if he reunites with Ronald Koeman in LaLiga, says Clarence Seedorf. Depay has been linked with a Barça move and is in the final year of his contract with Lyon’s current employers, who will either have to cash in during January or risk losing one of their unique benefits for next to nothing at the end of the season. A move in the previous transfer window was rumoured, especially after Koeman. He worked with the striker internationally during his tenure over the Netherlands – was appointed as the new head coach of the Spanish giants. Earlier this month, the Dutch boss refused to rule out a bid for Depay.
Sooner or later, Memphis has to be at a big club in Europe
While a move to Manchester United earlier in his career failed to work out as Depay scored just two goals in 33 Premier League appearances during his 18-month stint at Old Trafford, Seedorf believes his compatriot is now initiated for success in one of the major clubs in Europe. The 26-year-old has undoubtedly dominated the 2019/20 Champions League, scoring six goals to help surprise package Lyon upset both Juventus and Manchester City as they reached the last four. “I think Memphis Depay is one of the top talents in Europe right now,” said Seedorf, who has made 87 appearances for the Netherlands. “He had a severe injury, but he is a player who, sooner or later, has to be at a big club.
The Netherlands internationals want to play for Barcelona
“If it is Barcelona, it will be better for them. In the past, he has worked very well together”. Sincerely, Ronald Koeman has done a great job with the Netherlands national team. And especially with players like Memphis Depay, giving them the trust they need to come out and show their talent. “I am convinced that any big club that signs him will be delighted with his talent”. Depay discussed his future during the November international break, admitting that “everyone would like to play” at a club like Barça. “Who wouldn’t want to go to Barcelona? It is a top club,” he said after captaining the Netherlands in their recent 1-1 draw with Spain. “Let’s see what the future holds for me. Barça are one of the biggest clubs, and everyone would like to play there. But I am focused on my club and the national team.”
However, his eventual arrival at Barça could be part of a major squad rebuild, and Lionel Messi’s future will remain uncertain beyond the current campaign. Seedorf, however, believes Depay will provide a concrete building block during a time of change at Camp Nou. “Barcelona are in a moment of transition. And whenever they can attract players like Memphis they will prepare for the future,” said the former Real Madrid, Inter and Milan midfielder.
