Black Caps Lose “Fear Factor” as Michael Bracewell Sidelined for Cricket World Cup
New Zealand’s Cricket World Cup campaign has been dealt a significant blow with the news that all-rounder Michael Bracewell will be sidelined due to a long-term injury. The power hitter and offspinner suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg while playing for Worcestershire Rapids in the English T20 Blast.
The injury, which will require surgery in the UK, is expected to keep Bracewell out of action for 6-8 months, effectively ruling him out of the World Cup. Bracewell’s absence is a major setback for New Zealand, as coach Gary Stead acknowledged the loss of the team’s “fear factor” with the power-hitting all-rounder out of the lineup.
Bracewell’s explosive batting and off-spin bowling made him a crucial player, particularly on the spin-friendly pitches of India where the tournament is scheduled to take place. Adding to New Zealand’s woes is the continued uncertainty surrounding the availability of captain Kane Williamson.
Williamson suffered a serious knee injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in April and remains doubtful for the World Cup. Coach Stead admitted that the likelihood of Williamson not being able to participate, along with Bracewell’s absence, compounds the team’s challenges.
Michael Bracewell, who made his debut in March last year, quickly established himself as a vital member of the ODI side with his aggressive left-handed batting and off-spin bowling. He was expected to play a significant role as a spin-bowling all-rounder in New Zealand’s first-choice XI for the tournament opener against England.
The injury setback leaves Bracewell stranded in the UK for the next couple of weeks following his surgery, as he won’t be able to fly back to New Zealand immediately.
Coach Stead expressed his sympathy for Bracewell and the disappointment of missing a major event. He highlighted Bracewell’s exceptional skills and the important contributions he had made to the team since his international debut.

New Zealand’s preparations for the World Cup will continue with a series of T20 internationals in the UAE, followed by T20Is and one-day games against England in England. The team will have to regroup and find suitable replacements to fill the void left by Bracewell and potentially Williamson, as they aim to compete against the world’s best teams in their quest for World Cup glory.
The absence of key players like Michael Bracewell and the uncertainty surrounding Kane Williamson’s availability will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge for New Zealand.
However, cricket is a game of uncertainties, and the team will need to rally together, adapt their strategies, and find alternative sources of inspiration as they enter the highly-anticipated Cricket World Cup in India.
