Mikel Arteta is looking to improve his roster this summer but says he can’t bring in very expensive stars to boost his team.

What did Mikel Arteta say?

The Arsenal manager says the Gunners can’t transform a squad with a couple of huge banknotes this summer like the Reds did a few years ago. Liverpool’s fortunes have been transformed by signing defender keeper Van Dijk and Alisson for a combined £142m a couple of months apart and it has been suggested that the Gunners do the same as they push for a return to the top of English football. However, the Gunners boss says finances have their hands tied and he will have to be more saving on the transfer market rather than spending big money on stars.

Asked about the Reds completely changing their competitive outlook after signing Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, Mikel Arteta said he doesn’t think they are in a position to do so, so they should find other ways to do so. Liverpool have also improved their players immensely, which is just as important as player input. And then, the ones they buy, it’s important that they can have an impact right away. According to Arteta, this is a big decision they have to make when recruiting, and then they are people too. Mikel says they have to adapt and sometimes it’s a tough question to answer before they’re actually here.

Arteta talks about improving the Arsenal

Mikel has found joy in giving chances to young players, with Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka becoming the Gunners’ stars in recent seasons. However, he will need to carry out an extensive operation on the front lines this summer as Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah prepare to leave, which Mikel says he is already preparing for. Mikel Arteta said that they want to make the squad stronger, they want to make the starting XI stronger, they want to make the specificity and personality of their players stronger, and that’s what they will strive to do.

According to Arteta, this will depend on many factors – how many players have returned from their loans, with the obligations they still have with them; their financial situation in relation to where they end up; clubs’ requirements when they want to buy players or sell players. Mikel Arteta says there are a lot of question marks, but this is football.
