Militao became the key player in the defensive line of Real Madrid. After Ramos’ and Varane departure from the team, Militao had a big role and purpose in Madrid.

Militao was not a leader one year ago

Just six months ago, Eder Militao was barely given any playing time at Real Madrid as Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane were regarded as thee undisputed starters in defence. The Brazilian centre-back was at times Zinedine Zidane’s last option when it came to choosing his centre-back duo, but Militao’s form in the last stretch of the  2020/21 campaign converted him into a starter. Militao has played all seven of Real Madrid’s games so far this season and he is the only outfielder to have done so.

The leader that Madrid deserves

In total, the 23-year-old hasn’t missed out on any of Los Blancos’ last 21 games in all competitions and, following the departure of Varane and Ramos, he has become the leader of Real Madrid’s defence. While David Alaba and Nacho Fernandez are rotating at centre-back, Militao hasn’t been rested so far this season and has racked up 630 minutes on the pitch. In his first campaign at Los Blancos, he featured in a total of 1,469 minutes, having played in two of Real Madrid’s first six LaLiga Santander games. Meanwhile, in his second campaign Militao featured in just two of his team’s first 18 games in the league and in four in total until Matchday 28. The turning point was in Real Madrid’s match against Eibar, as Militao was introduced in the starting line-up and hasn’t been dropped by either Zidane or Carlo Ancelotti since. Carlo Ancelotti depends on the Brazilian defender. Although Militao is not a main man in Brazil’s national team, the player believes that chances will come and he is waiting patiently for it.
