Trent Boult has been named in the New Zealand squad for the Chappell-Hadlee series of One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Australia next month after relinquishing his central contract with Cricket New Zealand.

Trent Boult is one of five fast bowlers named in New Zealand’s 15-man squad for three One Day Internationals to be played in Cairns, North Queensland state.

Matt Henry has been recalled after being ruled out of New Zealand’s recently concluded white-ball tour of the West Indies due to a rib injury. He joins Boult, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson and newcomer Ben Sears in the squad.

Kane Williamson will lead the New Zealand side after being ruled out due to a hamstring injury in the second and third ODIs against the West Indies. Hard hitting all-rounder Glenn Phillips has also been retained.

Batsmen Henry Nicholls and Will Young have been dropped again and wrist spinner Ish Sodhi has also been dropped to make room for an extra seamer. Martin Guptill will retain his place and, in the recent matches, Guptill has given a good start to the Blackcaps.

“The fact that we are having to drop players of the caliber of Ish, Henry and Will reflects the increased depth we currently have at our disposal,” coach Gary Stead said in a statement. “Glenn is a versatile player who can cover most places in the batting order for us – as well as provide the option of bowling when needed.”

Kane Williamson has resumed captaincy after losing the last two matches against West Indies in Barbados, saying the team can’t wait to cross the Tasman.

“We have a great rivalry with Australia; It’s always a big opportunity for the fans, and the team is really looking forward to it,” Williamson said.

“You grew up watching the Chappell-Hadley Trophy series and remembering the great battles, so it is very special to be a part of another chapter.

“We know how difficult it is to beat Australia in our own conditions and we look forward to the challenge.”
