Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) to Kick Off in Mid-December with Five Teams
The upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to commence in mid-December, with a total of five teams participating in the tournament. This decision was confirmed by BPL GC secretary Iftikhar Rahman Mithu during a recent press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Time Constraints Ahead of ICC T20 World Cup
According to Iftikhar, the decision to host the BPL in a compact window from mid-December to mid-January was made due to time constraints leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled for the following year. He emphasized the importance of concluding the tournament before February to allow ample preparation time for the World Cup.
“Given the short window we have this year, we are comfortable with five teams. That doesn’t mean it can’t be six or seven in the future, but our priority is to stage a five-team BPL within a one-month window,” stated Iftekhar.
EOI Announced for Teams
Teams interested in participating in the BPL were informed that the Expression of Interest (EOI) would be announced soon. However, there is speculation that reigning champions Fortune Barishal may not take part in the upcoming edition. This uncertainty arose after team captain Tamim Iqbal announced a boycott of all cricket activities under what he deemed as an illegal leadership.
Iftekhar expressed hope that Fortune Barishal would reconsider their decision and participate in the competition. He acknowledged the team’s strong management and following in Barishal, stating, “We welcome them; they have run their team well and we have never had any complaints. So, we always want well-managed teams like theirs to participate.”
Strict Selection Process for Franchises
In light of the financial controversies that surfaced during the last edition of the BPL, Iftekhar emphasized that the selection of franchises for the upcoming tournament would be stringent. He stressed the importance of financial stability and effective cricket management in choosing suitable franchises to ensure a smooth and successful competition.
“If the financials aren’t right, if the management isn’t right… you might be a big group with good financials, but you need people for cricket management as well. We will primarily look at these things,” Iftekhar explained.
The stage is set for an exciting and competitive edition of the Bangladesh Premier League as teams gear up to showcase their talent and compete for the coveted title. Cricket fans can look forward to thrilling matches and outstanding performances as the BPL unfolds in the coming months.
