West Indies limited overs team has got a new captain. Recently, Caribbean all-rounder Kieron Pollard bid his goodbye to international cricket and due to that, the position for captaincy was vacant. It has been said from West Indies Cricket that Nicholas Pooran will take over the captaincy of the West Indies men’s ODI and T20 teams.

Pooran will also lead the team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be held later this year and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup to be held in October 2023. CWI President Ricky Skerritt congratulated Nicholas Pooran and added further on:

“Nicholas Pooran is a specially gifted cricketer, and the right person to take over the white ball captaincy. We are confident that he will continue to climb the leadership learning curve speedily, and successfully. I appeal to all West Indies cricket stakeholders to give Nicholas the support and encouragement that he deserves.”

Under the leadership of Kieron Pollard, West Indies couldn’t achieve any astonishing feat. However, the team, under Darren Sammy’s captaincy won the T20 World Cup 2016. In 2018, Kieron Pollard was appointed full time captain.

The West Indies Cricket Board has informed on Tuesday that Nicholas Pooran will be the captain of the ODI and T20 team, while Shai Hope has been given the vice-captain of limited overs cricket. Nicholas Pooran was the vice-captain of the Caribbean team in the short format for a long time and also took the responsibility as captain in some matches. Nicholas Pooran has captained the team in 10 international matches (eight T20s and two ODIs), where he has won four and lost six matches. After getting the captaincy, Pooran said:

“I am truly honored to be appointed captain of the West Indies team. I am following the footsteps of several giants of the game who have created an amazing legacy for West Indies cricket. This is indeed a prestigious role, a pivotal position in the West Indian society, as cricket is the force that brings us all West Indians together. To be named captain is indeed the highlight of my career so far and I want to drive the team forward to accomplish great things on the field for our fans and loyal supporters.”

Nicholas Pooran, who made his T20 International debut in 2016, has played 94 ODIs and T20 Internationals so far. In his career, he has scored more than 3300 runs. He has been able to score only one century in international cricket so far, but he has played many good innings in T20 and ODI cricket. He scored close to 500 runs in T20 International cricket last year and he has scored 348 runs this year.
