French striker Olivier Giroud has set his sights on surpassing Thierry Henry’s record of 51 goals scored for France as he claims of aging like fine wine.
Even though he’s 36 years old, Olivier Giroud claims he’s maturing like a vintage French wine.
And now that he has tied the record of 51 goals scored by Les Bleus legend Thierry Henry, the ex-Arsenal and Chelsea striker has his sights set on becoming his country’s all-time leading scorer.
France’s World Cup defense got underway Tuesday night with a 4-1 thrashing of Australia, with Olivier Giroud scoring twice in a vintage display of the center forward’s art. After saying he has no plans to put the lid back on, he suddenly wants the record for himself.
Giroud, who didn’t score when France won in Russia and was a late addition to Didier Deschamps’ squad for Qatar, said, “It means a lot to be alongside Thierry Henry as France’s top goalscorers.
“I consider myself very fortunate to be in Thierry’s company at the moment. We couldn’t have asked for a better beginning to the World Cup, and it’s an unbelievable feeling”.
“However, my goal is to continue playing football for as long as my body permits. That’s right, I’m a fierce competitor. I still have all of my fervor and enthusiasm. “As long as I have the energy, I will do everything in my power to help the team succeed. What I’m experiencing right now is phenomenal health. It has been said of me by my close circle of friends that “I age like a fine wine.”
Despite playing 546 minutes in the previous tournament, Giroud failed to score once.
As a result of Karim Benzema’s injury, who is the star player for Real Madrid, he was included in Deschamps’ Euro 2016 roster after being left off the roster the year before.
Giroud has scored 23 goals in 115 appearances for France on the international stage, eight fewer than the legendary Henry.
