Dembele changed the shape of the game against Benfica

If there is one player who has instantly benefitted from Xavi Hernandez’s arrival as Barcelona head coach, then perhaps it is Ousmane Dembele who is ready to thrive with the prominence given to him by the new boss and play like a real star and difference-maker. The French winger’s quality had never been doubted, but injuries and other issues have stalled his progress in Catalonia. He also arguably suffered from the competition for places in the Blaugrana attack, but that appears to be less of an issue now. In his half-hour run-out against Benfica, Dembele changed the shape of the game, and the crowd was willing the team to feed him the ball. The player himself looked up for it and keened to impress.

Xavi isn’t hiding the fact that he is a fan of Ousmane Dembele

Since Lionel Messi’s departure for Paris Saint-Germain, there is a vacancy for an idol at the Camp Nou, and Dembele has shown his desire to audition for the part, as well as his ability to rise to the challenge. Renewing his contract is undoubtedly one of the club’s top priorities, as otherwise, the 24-year-old could leave Barcelona for free, as Messi did, at the end of the season. Xavi is aware of this and has already spoken to Dembele’s agent, eager to avoid such an eventuality. The new head coach isn’t hiding the fact that he is a fan of Dembele and wants him to stay. Xavi has been impressed by the Frenchman’s mentality as well as his footballing ability. “I have spoken to him, and he’s pleased here,” Xavi said after the draw with Benfica.

“Today, there was a risk of injury, but he wanted to play. He’s a winner. We’re going to try and let’s see if we can renew [his contract] because, for me, he’s a key piece.” The boss has spoken, and now the ball is very much in the player’s court. Barcelona can’t throw money at him right now, but they can offer him playing time and support.”
