Pat Cummins has left the Indian Premier League with a minor hip injury, but the Test captain is able to handle an intense round of cricket in the months ahead.

It was already announced that he would miss out on three T20 Internationals, beginning his six-week-long tour of Sri Lanka.

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins will miss the remainder of the Indian Premier League due to a hip injury but is set to play Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka as planned.

Cummins will remain in Sydney to recover from his injury before taking part in the ODI and Test leg of the tour from next month, which is expected to take two weeks to recover.

The news of Cummins’ injury comes just days after he played a key role in Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory over Mumbai Indians.

Cummins hadn’t been picked by KKR coach Brendon McCullum in almost a month, but he made the most of his comeback, taking three wickets in an over to finish with figures of 3-22.

The Sri Lanka tour marks the beginning of an action-packed year and a half for the Australian cricket team. Before October 2023, Australia will compete in a T20 World Cup, a home Test series in the summer, a tour of India, an Ashes campaign and an ODI World Cup.

Coach Andrew McDonald is likely to rest Cummins and other superstars Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood at different times over a span of 18 months, as they did before the recent tour of Pakistan.

The Aussies are hopeful that Cummins can quickly mend his hip injury and regain the talent he had shown during his last tour of the subcontinent.

Cummins took more wickets than any other Australian player in the tour of Pakistan and took eight wickets in two innings in the decisive third Test, earning him the Player of the Match.

Cummins’ hip injury will force him out of the final two matches of the IPL regular season, but he is unlikely to miss any play-off action; Seventh-placed KKR need to win their last two games and hope other results fall to make it to the play-offs.

Making things even more difficult, Knight Riders will take on second-placed Lucknow Super Giants, one of the two new franchises, for their final match.
