During the first Ashes match between Australia and England, when Robinson dismissed Australian batsman Usman Khawaja in the first innings, the media had an interaction with the 29-year-old. He was questioned about his behaviour towards Khawaja after dismissing him at 140 runs. Robison said, “We have all seen Ricky Ponting and other Australians do the same to us, so just because the show is on the other foot, it has not been accepted well.
Ponting’s response to Robison’s words
Recently in an ICC interview, Ricky Ponting gave a statement on Robison’s words and said that it would be better if he focused on his performances rather than looking at Ashes history. This England team hasn’t played against Australia, and they will know very soon what it is like to play Ashes cricket and play against a good Australian team. If Ollie Robison hasn’t learned this in the last week, he’s learning slowly.
Ponting further said, ” He included my name in it, which I found a bit unusual. If he is thinking about me, then no wonder he bowled like he did in that game. If he is concerned about what I did 15 years ago, He’ll learn very quickly that if you are going to talk to Australian cricketers in an Ashes series, you will need to back it up with skills.
England displayed a aggressive approach during first test
The former Australian skipper also feels that Moeen Ali will not be playing the second test as he injured his finger during the first test. Ponting also stated that Jonny Bairstow’s wicket-keeping flaw was one of the main reasons that England lost the first match. The first Ashes test saw England fully display their Bazball style. Their batsmen showed an aggressive approach in both innings, and while bowling, English captain Ben Stokes made some experimental fielding changes as well. His decision to declare early during the first innings saw some criticism, but after the match he stated that “we wanted to show Australia that our team is ready to take on them”. Ponting was impressed by England’s aggressive approach and Stokes’ experimental captaincy, too.
Despite an aggressive display England lost the first test and Ponting believes that this will definitely put pressure on England for the second test. He said “ This will be a good test of leadership and coaching. England have played matches in Pakistan on flat wickets and they have also played six matches with New Zealand which they won , that is the reason I was curious about what is going to happen.
