The situation
LaLiga has published an advanced statistics project with data from the 21-22 season through the Beyond Stats team of analysts. Real Madrid has swept the possession data this season and leads most of the rankings. The ‘classic’ possession is still marked by FC Barcelona with 62.8% , followed by Real Madrid with 58.7%. In third position is Lopetegui’s team with 58%. These data are not surprising, since they are the teams most linked to the creation of the game. Extending the term of possession there are different metrics in which Ancelotti’s team is above the rest. This explains one of the keys why they have won the league title this season. The offensive phases of the game are more elaborate the more players invest in them , in contrast to the verticality that occurs if fewer players are involved in possession. The classification of the teams that use the most players per possession is led by Real Madrid with almost four players (3.69), followed by FC Barcelona (3.57), Sevilla (3.26), Villarreal (3, 1) and Betis (2.95).
possession passes
If the focus is centered on the number of passes made in each of the possessions, Real Madrid is once again the one that gives the most (6.5) closely followed again by the Catalan team (6.4), Sevilla (5.6), Villarreal (5.2) and Betis (5.1) . The ranking of players and passes per possession are maintained. The time factor also comes into play in the data offered by LaLiga. The teams that produce the most passes per minute of possession are Real Madrid (17.5), Barcelona (17) and Sevilla (16.2). This time the figure of Atlético de Madrid appears, executing 15.4 passes per minute of possession, equaling Betis. The final classification of LaLiga Santander coincides with the parameters of possession. The first three places are occupied by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla, while the fourth and fifth places alternate between four teams: Atlético, Betis, Villarreal and Celta de Vigo.
