Premier League: Tottenham Vs West Ham – Match preview
Each of the last three competitive meetings between these two at this venue saw Tottenham score 2 goals whilst they’ve achieved that feat in their last four Premier League outings too, including a 5-0 demolition of Everton in their last home fixture.
Tottenham
The 2019 Champions League final was meant to be a watershed moment for Tottenham in European competition, yet fast-forward three years and ‘Spurs’ are staring down the barrel of a third successive season without qualifying for Europe’s premier competition. They start the round three points from bitter rivals Arsenal in fourth – despite having played a game more – and will be desperate to maintain a dominant Premier League home record against visitors West Ham United here after losing only two of the last 19 home H2Hs. Each of the last three competitive meetings between these two at this venue saw Tottenham score 2 goals whilst they’ve achieved that feat in their last four Premier League outings too, including a 5-0 demolition of Everton in their last home fixture.
But it’s worth highlighting that city neighbours have caused Antonio Conte’s side major headaches already this season, and as it stands, his side have accumulated the fewest points of any side in London derbies so far.
West Ham
Although West Ham will be on a high from Thursday night’s 2-0 victory over Sevilla, the Europa League quarter-finalists have it all to do if they’re to go one better and make the Champions League this season. They’re above Tottenham on goal difference alone, although they have played a game more, which could be a concern given that they travel across town having won just two of their last nine Premier League away matches. David Moyes’ men might believe they hold the psychological edge over Tottenham though as they’ve won the last two Premier League H2Hs. That gives them the chance for a third straight Premier League win over Spurs for the first time since 1999 which would hand their Champions League ambitions a major boost.
Tottenham’s Lucas Moura has got on the scoresheet in two of the last three competitive H2H meetings, with both matches finishing 2-1. As has West Ham’s Michail Antonio, and another here would be his seventh goal against Spurs making them his joint-favourite opponent alongside Watford. Tottenham are aiming to avoid losing three straight Sunday Premier League games for the first time since 2012.
