PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi says the Super League project was not in the best interest of football, insisting that the Champions League must be defended.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi about the Super League

Paris Saint-Germain was not among the 12 members of the competition who pledged to break away from UEFA and compete with or replace the Champions League. The plan collapsed within days of its announcement, as football governing bodies and fan protests convinced nine clubs to pull out and Nasser believes football is better without a controversial idea. The head of PSG said that football has been around for years and years. The Super League was not based on defending the interests of football. According to Nasser Al-Khelaifi, you can anticipate change without breaking the tradition that every club can hope to achieve their dreams. All teams must be able to take part in the largest competitions on the same day, while remaining under the umbrella of UEFA. The Champions League is a very strong brand that needs to be preserved, but according to Nasser they must always be able to adapt to the market, and this is true for all competitions, domestic or international.

The current situation in the Super League

Nine teams that have confirmed their withdrawal from the project have been invited back to the UEFA competition. Those clubs, AC Milan, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Inter, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Tottenham, were hit with minor financial penalties and were forced to abdicate the Super League. UEFA has opened disciplinary action against Juve, Real and Barcelona, who remain committed to shaping a new competition. Three clubs have opposed UEFA for threatening to sanction them, claiming it was a violation of the rule of law. Nevertheless, UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin is confident that the conspiracy is still dead, insisting that it will take at least another 10 years before the Super League is reborn. Aleksandar said that at the end of the day it was very positive that this happened because it helped to clarify what the situation is in European football.
