England v South Africa

Quinton de Kock looked a little different. The ball was coming out of his bat like a bullet and he was in full form to earn the big score. But the weather at Headingley did not suit it. The third One Day International match between England and South Africa was called off after just two hours of play due to rain. De Kock scored an unbeaten 92 in 76 balls and South Africa scored 159 for two in 27.4 overs.

Although the weather ruled out Quinton de Kock from scoring 18th ODI century, de Kock’s return to form is a matter of concern for England. The opener came into the series without any warm-up match and started with scores of 19 and five. But in the third match, he was seen in full flow, his innings was also enjoyed by the audience.

After a 2-1 loss to India in Twenty20 and ODIs, it was a blow for Jos Buttler to miss his chance to claim his first series win as full-time captain.

In fact the schedule was something Buttler was eager to uncover when assessing the start of his life as a replacement for Eoin Morgan. England have three Twenty20s against South Africa next week – starting in Bristol on Wednesday – to complete 12 white-ball international runs in just 24 days.

England, which had previously dominated with the bat under Morgan, were all out in all five ODI innings and missed an opportunity to reestablish themselves here.

Butler said: “It’s disappointment that we don’t have a training days. I think they train for that team cohesion, the energy within the group, the fielding drills, the camaraderie around people without the pressure of a game. Days are really important for high performance.”

“There is a lot of time around training when you do your best work, away from the pressure of the game, have good conversations and get a feel for where the group is. And not always in game mode, preparing for the boys during the day. To make the highest level of cricket possible, you need to prepare properly.

“Hopefully that’s something we can look at. As a new captain, just take that time to sleep and work with your players and your coaches. It’s a disappointment to be really honest. It would be nice to have that time to work. But we don’t, so you just have to adapt and find the best way.”

While the batting didn’t really last in five ODI innings – Jonny Bairstow topping the average with 27 and one in three half-centuries – the main positive for Buttler was Reece Topley, who took 11 wickets in 5 matches. Butler, noting three injured absences in the form of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes, said of Reece Topley, “Whenever he has the ball, he looks like a threat.”
