Rangnick wants to return to Schalke

Joachim Low’s one of the rumoured contenders to succeed as Germany boss, Ralf Rangnick, has been in talks with Schalke about the possibility of returning to the club as sporting director. The 62-year-old is ready, having stepped down as head of sport and development at Red Bull last summer. Rangnick is highly regarded at Schalke, earning two successful periods as a manager at the club that gave the DFB-Pokal trophy and the German Supercup and a run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2011. The Bundesliga side moved quickly to deny the offers. And an agreement was reached for a comeback, although they insist that Rangnick will always be well thought of regardless. “The Supervisory Board will not give opinions on possible or tradable candidates who, in principle, will remain so.”

The former RB Leipzig boss says he could also work with Germany

“The committee has made it clear, however, that reports that there was a ‘preliminary agreement’ between FC Schalke and Ralf Rangnick or his advisor are not correct. Regardless of what happens, Ralf Rangnick remains a highly regarded expert and a welcome former Schalke boss. Bringing someone of Rangnick’s standing back to the club would be a welcome boost for Schalke, who have endured a disastrous 2020-21 season so far. They currently have eight adrift points at the bottom of the Bundesliga with just 10 points from 24 games have already sacked four managers this season. Sporting director Jochen Schneider also left the club in December.

Rangnick is also considered one of the contenders for the job in Germany after news that Joachim Low will fall behind after this summer’s European Championship. Rangnick said he would be interested in taking over if the timing was right. While the former RB Leipzig boss says he could also work with Germany in a different role. Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick was also involved with the job. While Jurgen Klopp was the first favourite before he dedicated his near future to Liverpool.
