The Austrian Football Association has said that it would not meet with Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick to discuss a national team vacancy.

According to reports in Austria, the federation’s sports director, Peter Schottel, travelled to Manchester on Monday to speak with Rangnick about the role.

The Austrian Football Association, on the other hand, published a statement on Wednesday, writing on Twitter: ‘Clarification: No meeting between OFB sports director Peter Schottel and @ManUtd coach Ralf Rangnick took place.’

Following their World Cup play-off semi-final defeat by Wales last month, Austria parted ways with manager Franco Foda.

The temporary manager of the Red Devils is due to be replaced at the conclusion of the season, but he has already signed a two-year deal to work as a consultant at Old Trafford.

Rangnick will only work six days a month when he starts his new job.

In November, the former Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig manager took over for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis. With United dropping to seventh in the Premier League and quitting the Champions League at the last-16 stage, the 63-year-old German has struggled to oversee an improvement in performances and results.

Rangnick’s next role has been kept under wraps by United, but it is rumoured if he stays at Old Trafford until 2024, it will entail 144 days of work.

Rangnick was not consulted in the club’s search for a permanent manager, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag of Ajax emerging as front runners after conversations.

Pochettino has the support of several former United players, but Ten Hag is gaining traction among United supporters.

Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique of Sevilla are considered outsiders, with the latter guiding Spain at the World Cup this year.

Rangnick’s part-time duties at United will largely depend on whose manager is hired, although there is some uncertainty about what the German will be expected to do, with Darren Fletcher, John Murtough, and Matt Judge overseeing the club’s football operations.

Rangnick has been candid about where United has to improve to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool, saying this week that a simplified recruitment process is more vital than the next head coach. He believes United has a habit of signing players who are too similar to one another.
