Ralf Rangnick Says He Has No Idea What Darren Fletcher’s Position at United is.
Ralf Rangnick has revealed that he is unsure about Darren Fletcher’s role at Old Trafford, but has lauded the former Manchester United midfielder for his positive influence on the team.
The Scotsman is United’s technical director, although he’s been seen in the dugout with Rangnick and his coaching staff on several occasions.
Even more strangely for a guy with his status, the 38-year-old has assisted in the management of Carrington training sessions since Michael Carrick and Kiernan McKenna quit the coaching staff when Rangnick was named interim manager in December.
Despite the ambiguity surrounding Fletcher’s employment, the German seemed to enjoy his company. Rangnick remarked in his news conference ahead of the game against Leeds, ‘I can only comment about what I’ve experienced in the last 11 to 12 weeks.’
‘He has always been present at practically every practice and game.’
‘Anytime I’ve got a question about what he thinks, because he obviously knows the guys and has known them for a long time,’ I’ve asked him. I may, and would, ask him for his opinion at any time. As a result, having him on the team is beneficial.’ What does he have to do with the club? To be honest, I have no idea. Only what happens in the training sessions, surrounding the training sessions, and during the games can I tell you about. It’s beneficial to have him on board in those areas.’
Fletcher won 13 major championships during his 13 years with United, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.
In October 2020, he returned to Old Trafford to coach United’s Under-16 squad, and in January of last year, he was moved to first-team coach before being named the club’s first-ever technical director two months later.
Fletcher is anticipated to play a key part in the hunt for a new permanent manager, alongside football director John Murtough, with Rangnick expected to move into a consultant role for the next two years.
